The Brief

As part of a major Transport for NSW road upgrade involving the reconstruction of a key roundabout in Milsons Point, a large mature palm positioned at the centre of the roundabout required removal to allow works to proceed. Rather than lose a significant landscape feature, the brief was to safely transplant the palm to a suitable local site at a St Leonards Park, ensuring it continued to contribute to the area’s character.

Site Challenges

All works had to be completed at night due to traffic conditions and road occupation requirements.

  • The project involved strict expectations from both a Tier 1 contractor and government stakeholders.
  • The palm was large and mature, requiring careful planning around crane setup and movement constraints.
  • Accurate pre-lift weight calculations were essential to ensure safe lifting and handling.

Our Approach & Execution

The relocation was delivered through extensive planning and precise execution:

  • Coordination with supervisors from government bodies and Arenco to ensure compliance with all project, safety and traffic requirements.
  • Detailed preparation, including tree weight estimation, cranage setup design and staging of night-shift operations.
  • Sensitive excavation and lifting of the palm, with significant bracing installed to support its tall structure throughout the move.
  • Post-relocation assessment and monitoring to support establishment at the new site.
  • Completion of all works within a compressed timeframe while maintaining a high standard of quality and safety.

Impact & Outcome

The project resulted in the successful preservation of a significant Sydney palm that may otherwise have been removed. Key outcomes included:

  • Retention of an important landscape feature, now integrated into a St Leonards park where it complements the existing environment.
  • Community benefit, with the palm continuing to provide visual and ecological value in a public setting.
  • Demonstration of strong environmental commitment, reflecting government and contractor dedication to sustainable tree management practices.

This project showcases how thoughtful planning and co-ordinated execution can align major infrastructure works with effective tree preservation.
