The Brief

A new development planned for the site would significantly impact two mature Wollemi Pines. These trees held strong sentimental value for the client, having been planted by their father 20 years earlier. Beyond personal significance, the trees also carried ecological importance, as Wollemi Pines are one of the rarest and most ancient tree species on earth and classified as critically endangered. The client engaged Dixons to safely relocate the trees onto nearby private property to ensure their ongoing conservation and continued connection to the family.

Site Challenges

  • Wollemi Pines are extremely sensitive to changes in ground conditions, making them challenging to transplant successfully.
  • The work area was tight and densely vegetated, limiting machinery access and requiring highly precise manoeuvring.
  • The trees’ fragile structure demanded careful handling during excavation and lifting.

Our Approach & Execution

To ensure the long-term survival of these rare trees, Dixons undertook a carefully planned and highly technical relocation:

  • A combination of specialised plant and equipment was used, including a small Franna crane suited to confined spaces.
  • Sensitive excavation techniques were applied to protect the trees’ delicate root systems and natural form.
  • Complex lifting methods were implemented to accommodate the fragile structure of the Wollemi Pines.
  • The team worked within tight time constraints and addressed the client’s precise quality expectations to achieve the best possible outcome.

Impact & Outcome

The successful relocation ensured the long-term preservation of two critically endangered Wollemi Pines. Key outcomes included:

  • Protection of an ancient and rare species, contributing to its ongoing conservation.
  • Retention of sentimental value, allowing the client to continue caring for trees planted by their father.
  • Enhanced landscape value, with the Wollemi Pines now complementing the natural character of the new property.

This project highlights how expert planning and sensitive execution can preserve both environmental significance and personal heritage.
